Franchising continues to grow in the UAE and shows no sign of slowing down, as stated by His Excellency Mohamed H. Al Muhairi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Chairman of the Emirates Association for Franchise Development (FAD), at the recent World Franchise Council summit held in Abu Dhabi.
Among other areas of sector growth within franchising, His Excellency explained that food and beverage concepts continue to grow in the UAE, and that there are now over 100 franchise systems residing in the country, which has grown markedly in recent years, ever since the first franchises (Dairy Queen and Pizza Hut) arrived in 1979. The recent exponential growth of the industry saw the birth of FAD in 2015 to promote, pioneer, nurture, support and diversify the areas of franchising activities in the UAE.
The success of franchising in the country was made evident at the International Franchise Exhibition 2019, held in Abu Dhabi, which attracted over 5,000 visitors over two days and culminated in a number of deals from serial entrepreneurs, small business owner and investors totalling over Dhs27 million.
Throughout the week, FAD also hosted the World Franchise Council summit, where 47 member nations were invited to convene, continue to share best practice, and drive the industry forward through ethical franchising and education.
Throughout a week of meetings, excellent hospitality and cultural experiences for franchising leaders all over the world, there were updated reports on risks and implications of joint employer liability, using digital marketing and social to attract, communicate and to new members, best practice in regards to governance structures within each association.
States His Excellency Mohamed H. Al Muhairi: “It was an honour to host the World Franchise Council summit and show the world what our country has to offer. We are proud to be members of the WFC and help promote the industry on a global level.
“Franchising is an important part of the UAE economy, and we expect it to grow considerably. I was pleased to share our growth with other members.
“It has also been a fantastic mix of both international franchisors coming into the UAE market and making the most of opportunities here, as well as home-grown franchise systems in the UAE starting up and growing, some already going out to other international markets.”
